TTK - How light level is calculated

Post by DeadSockPuppet on Sat Sep 19, 2015 9:29 pm

Found an article that explains how light level is determined:

Pre-Artifact:
3 weaps - 13.04% each
4 armor - 10.87% each
Ghost/class - 8.7% each

With an artifact:
3 weaps - 12% each
4 armor - 10% each
Ghost/class/artifact - 8% each

Hopefully this helps those of you trying to decide which gear to possibly buy or upgrade to be raid ready.  Here's the article I pulled the info from: http://www.inquisitr.com/2421607/destiny-the-taken-king-light-levels-explained-what-matters/

Sure would be nice to get an artifact higher than LL220, ugh.  Even with that crappy 220 artifact I'm sitting at 282 light.

Have faith. I was in the same spot. I eventually got an artifact to drop that helped me out but I'm pretty sure I got my current 300 artifact as a reward from one of the quest lines, Eris. Or from hitting Rank 5 with her. I can't remember which.

EDIT: After some looking it seems "Depose the Court" from Eris gives you a 300 artifact. You also get an artifact from hitting Rank 5 with Eris but it's RNG on the value (not guaranteed 300).

I know I have a few items holding me back as well (with some legendaries that are lower than the blues). I'm about at the point to spend some tokens and upgrade my legendary gear to fill gaps. Has anyone upgraded any yet, does it max them or only go up a small amount?

Infusing gear? Here is how it works...

First you must have an item of greater value to breakdown in order to infuse. Doing so will bring the low level items light value up. If an item is within 5 light of each other you will get full value. (i.e you have a 275 and break down a 280, your 275 will become 280). If the gap is great then 5 light, you get 80% of the light value.

Important notes:

- Blue item can be used to Infuse. Get a purple you really like but keep getting blue drop that are better? Infuse the purple with the better blues to raise up your purple

- You can infuse cross-class items. Meaning that you can use that Titan helm to upgrade your Warlocks helm.

Some stuff I have brought up with me like my first sword that originally was 220 is now 292, others I just used the blues for a while till I found a good Purple close to 280 and brought it up from there. Even though Blue are now as good as Purples for light I sill have a hard time wearing them. It just seems wrong. Guess I am a snob.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. I better start holding onto those high light blues then. I know light/defense/attack values are essentially the same, but running two extra perks on the legendary purples vs one on the blues is worth it.

Basic rule of thumb to leveling is if the light rating is higher, either equip it or infuse it (at least from 260+) So if you get something higher than what you have, do not delete it. either wear it or use it to level something else.

Also, be sure to wear your best stuff when decrypting engrams. Engrams now decrypt based off of you current light level. If you have a bunch to decrypt? Decrypt like 5 at a time, check them, put on the better stuff, then decrypt 5 more. You'll inch your way up to 280+ in no time.

Is 280 the highest on legendary and 290 for exotic?

Yea, I have been keeping my highest items as a set of "decryption" gear.

Unfortunately I'm having a hard time with the "Depose the Court" quest due to not running with a high level fireteam.  I'll jump in with randoms every once and a while but that usually turns out ugly.  I still have only completed one of the stolen rune runs (need 3) and don't even have the last rune I need.

Regarding the Eris rep..since I hadn't played much in a long time my rep with her is really low.  If I remember correctly even after all the stuff I've done to this point on TTK I'm only at level 2 so I don't know that it'll even be possible to get her up to 5 anytime soon.

Well, just be sure to run by the court at least once a night and check it out. I usually am either solo or with Kenny and it's all about who is there. Several time there is just 1 or 2 guys hanging out. We all pop out a level 1 or 2 rune and run around for a bit and before you know it there are 6 guys hanging out and they are popping 2s and 3s like crazy. They don't have to be your rune to progress the mission (I don't think). Just ride the wave of other bros!

Negative.  Legendary Engrams can drop for any amount (as well as Blues).  You can only buy them for 280 but the go all the way up to 310 (Blue and Purple).

Exotics are bought at 280, drop at 290 (and have a chance to drop at 310 once you hit 300).

EDIT: Also, some quest rewards I have gotten include a 300 Purple Shotty and a 300 Purple Artifact.

And BAM!  LL292.  Did just that and ended up with 5 guys tearing sh1t up.  Got the 300 artifact along with some other stuff that I was able to use to upgrade a couple other things.

I'm up to 285 right now with some lucky drops. Stating in the strike playlist without going to orbit seemed to drop me a purple just about every strike. I guess that boost makes a difference.

Yep, getting to the point that there's not much to do in the way of questing so the raid is about all that's left.  I doubt I'll see much of that so I'll probably play a little bit more and then taper off.

You should hit up one of the LFG sites. It's easy to get a group and the Raids are a lot of fun. We usually use the100.io for our Raids. Everyone on the PS4 side has an account there so we just set it up there. Those who can make it join up and the rest fill with randoms. Makes it super easy to get a group and it's full before you even start.
