No Man's Sky...

Post by S7 Interseptor on Tue Jun 16, 2015 11:17 am

...makes another impressive showing at E3. The game continues to look amazing but what the hell is it? I mean it looks great and has mind blowing size and scope but I still have no idea what the point is. Visit any planet, go anywhere in what seems like an endlessly expanding universe. Visit planets, take part in space battles and discover new locations no one has ever been to... but why? Is it just an exploration game? Is there a point to it all? What do you guys think? I am really intrigued by this game but I just don't know if it will be cool for more than a few hours once the novelty wears off.

It looks like it's an exploration game. It seems like it does have an objective which is to get to the center of the universe. I think there is quite a bit that we still don't know about the game such as what the other markers on planets are for. I find it to be similar to Minecraft in a way, without the building. But during the demo, they showed that structures could be destroyed so I'm just assuming that maybe you can be able to build stuff at some point in the future.

I feel like its going to be one of those game that you don't binge on per say but instead come back time and time again if you are looking for a fun and relaxing game in spurts. I am very interested to see how they will implement worlds that is not based around the basic structure of oxygen, but instead something like nitrogen. Its difficult to fathom what a world would look like in its plant life, animals, landscape, based on fundamental elements that we have not personally seen as a human race. This game reminds me of Star Citizen where the major goal is exploration but it is missing that wow factor.

Like Xpert said, the goal it to reach the center of the universe, from what I've read. But ultimately I think it's just an open-world exploration game.

Agreed, I don't see this as being a game to play for many hours each day. I know I would get burnt out quickly if I were to do so. There's still stuff we don't know about the game, but as of now it's just looks like a simple exploration game. Traveling to different planets to observe the different environments and life.

Still don't know what to say about space battles. I think the guy doing the demo was really nervous or horrible at demoing because he was like "I'm going to show you space battles", shoots at a few ships, "ok that was space battle". ummmmm ok. I wanted to know more about the different factions. Would there be repercussions for helping one over the other repeatedly? Can you join factions? Or is it just two random factions duking it out over a planet and it doesn't matter what you do?

Re: No Man's Sky...

Post by S7 Interseptor on Thu Jun 18, 2015 10:41 am

Here is a little more info...

10 Things We Learned About No Man's Sky

1) No Man's Sky not have a traditional story with cutscenes and a predefined hero. Like Minecraft and Terraria, the player creates and defines their own experience.

2) Planets are planet sized. You can spend days exploring just one world, experiencing its day and night cycles while walking its surface or flying through the sky in your spaceship (or jet pack)

3) Once you discover a planet, you can change its randomly generated name to whatever you want. The same goes for any creatures you find on its surface.

4) Although you're free to do what you want in No Man's Sky, there are consequences for your actions. If you kill too many creatures or deplete a planet's valuable resources,  your “wanted” level will go up, and the planet’s “Sentinels” will come after you. If you pick a fight in space, the space police will come after you. And if you pick a fight with them, prepare to take on the military.

5) Almost everything in the game can be upgraded: shields, ships, weapons, and even your spacesuit.

6) There are three basic gameplays styles: exploring, trading, and fighting.

7) If you die in the game, you'll lose any information you did not save to "The Atlus", a giant computer that records your progress and can be accessed via a planet's beacons.

8 ) You can literally craft items on an atomic level by using blueprints you find in the game.

9) Even when the game "ends" (i.e.making it to the center of the galaxy) you can continue to explore worlds for as long as you want.

10) You can share your discoveries online by uploading information to The Atlus, which will allow friends to see everything you've discovered in the game.

For me it will largely depend on the price. $20-$30 would be the sweet spot for me and I'd pick it up for sure. Anything more and I will have to think about it.

Looks like this game will be released simultaneously on PC and PS4. I might get it for PS4. Depends on how soon it releases and how soon I decide to get a PS4.

Some new gameplay and discussion with one of the devs.  This game is looking pretty sweet, especially the last couple minutes when they're showing that size of the universe.

I can't find a release date but the guy in the video said at E3 they were hoping to have a date soon. There's also debate about cost of the game. Most people seem to agree that it will be $60 like most AAA titles.

Currently has a release date of June 21, 2016 for both PS4 and PC.  Seems like it'll just be a single player game with the multiplayer aspect being you can see what other have named species, planets, etc.  Which I'm fine with.  Even if you have 100,000,000 players exploring the universe, the odds of meeting one player on an actual planet-sized planet in a universe with 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets is incredibly low anyway.

Bump!

Well, I have been really looking into this game the last few days and I think I am gonna grab it so I'll be your guinea pig and report back exactly what the hell it is and if it's any good.

I did find a video from IGN's second exclusive video with 21 mins of gameplay very illuminating. You can see some of the menus, upgrades, trading, stealing etc...  One of the most impressive things I saw was at one point early in the video he is freezing and uses his gun to blast a giant hole in the ground that lead to an underground cave network!  That level of detail on one random planet, in a game with 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets is completely insane.  You can watch the full video below...

Oh, and I love that you don't know what the alien races are saying until you have enough contact with them to learn their language.

Sounds like Voyager, Chippy and I will be getting it. I'm going to preorder from Best Buy to get the ship with the hyperdrive and lasers. Don't know how much helpful it will be, but might as well get something out of my purchase.
