Bloodborne

Post by S7 Interseptor on Tue Mar 24, 2015 11:21 am

The PS4 exclusive Bloodborne is here!!!  I got to play a little last night at launch and I can already say that this game is going to be fantastic.  For the uninitiated, Bloodborne is the new IP from the "Souls" series of games.  It has many of the same mechanics and feels like a true Souls game but set in a new Victorian style era.

Right from the get go the game throws you into the middle of things and tells you very little.  Just like any good Souls game lol.  So far it's pretty hard and I just worked around the starting area for about an hour.  I died several times.  Fortunately my gameplay style from previous Souls games still works here for the most part.  Some people are having an issue with adjusting with the lack of shields in this game but fortunately I never used them.

All in all I am very excited to start my new adventure.  I'll be streaming live tonight with a fresh start and roll a new character.  Join me for some fun, and probably a few fails, deaths and raging (ok, lots of deaths and raging lol).

Trust me I understand.  As a Souls fan, this game was one of the biggest deciding factors for me buying a PS4 first.  If I did not already have a PS4, it would be killing me right now to play this.  You can live vicariously through me if you like.  I'll post up when I go live with the stream this afternoon.

So, Day 1 complete!  Has a little trouble getting my footing at first but I felt pretty good by the end of the night.  I've beat two bosses so far and progressed a good way through the opening area.  So far the game is pretty amazing.  I'm loving the level design so far.  It really is similar to the original Demon's Souls game (and the first Dark Souls game too).  Levels wrap around themselves and after an hour of playing and exploring you find a new short cut to unlock that leads right back to the beginning of the level.  This is helpful for when you die and have to start over... which, you know... happens.

This does lead me to one of the biggest grips so far.  Loading time!  Holy crap!  It's kind of awful but fortunately they are supposed to be working on a patch to fix that now.  Sadly right now you have to wait a solid minute to load each time you die.  And for a game know to kill people, often and in great numbers, well you can imagine the load time start to get annoying.

Still, good start to a new adventure.  The opening area is very cool so far and the game is exactly what I was looking for.  More to come and more streaming tonight.

Sounds like a fun game. And hey, we all know games with horrible loading times at launch can still be great! (Looking at you Mass Effect Elevators and Oblivion Doors)

Plus we have tons of tips and tricks we have learned along the way.  If you have never experienced a Souls game, you really should.  Don't let the perceived difficulty stop you.

I wouldn't be surprised but I'm not sure how long you might have to wait, if it happens at all.  While it's true Dark Souls 1 & 2 were ported, they were multiconsole.  Bloodborne is a Sony IP, published by an in house Sony studio and Sony rarely releases it's console exclusive on any other platform.  Most Sony exclusives are only available on Sony consoles. If I were you, I'd buy it for the PS4 for sure.  Plus then you could co-op with Kenny and I.  We would straight wreck this game.

Yes, yes you can.  And if your PS4 is set-up properly you can buy the game online from your PC and it will turn on your PS4 and start DLing automatically.  You can play when you get home.  It's how I roll.

Re: Bloodborne

Post by S7 Interseptor on Fri Mar 27, 2015 10:33 am

So, last night we finally dove into the Chalice Dungeons and I gotta say it's a really nice edition to the game.  For those unaware, Chalice Dungeons are procedurally generated dungeons that you can share with others.  So basically I set one up in my game world and it generates a dungeon.  Then I can share that dungeon with other people and we can play it solo or co-op.

So both Kenny and I loaded up some dungeons and proceeded to work through them co-op.  It was a blast plus you get souls, mats and insight.  It's not a great place to farm per se but it's not bad and it's a lot of fun.

The nice thing is you can mess around co-op in there regardless of where you are in the story.  Because depending on what is going on, unless you make an effort to be in the same place as your friends, playing co-op in the story part of the game is not always convenient.  But with Chalice Dungeons you can just take a break and hit a new dungeon anytime you like.  It's pretty sweet.

I'll probably get it in a couple weeks.  Getting near the end of my nightmare diff. completion of DA:I.  That one was pretty tough early on, but has become much easier since I'm going completionist style doing all the side quests which has overleveled me a bit.

I think I'll take on the challenge solo and just try to work through it all trading off the controls between by GF and I.  When one of us gets stumped on something the other usually comes up with the answer, so this should be a fun mental exercise to do together.

Sounds like a good time.  There is a ton of depth to this game and basically no information provided or hand holding.  Feel free to ask anything you like.  I prefer to go through these games without a guide but it is nearly impossible to know everything you need to without looking something up or asking.  Even Kenny and I are constantly talking about what items to what or how to clear a section of the game etc...

All I can say is pay attention to everything, no matter how small.  The littlest clue can be a saving grace.  What people say and the description on items can play a big role.  There is a ton of story/lore if you are willing to dig for it and pay attention.

Good hunting.

This was one of my concerns too...that it would be not only difficult, but in a way that would be unfair or cheap...difficult but fair is ok.  Isn't it still true that when you ring the bell someone can enter your world and kill you and take your stuff too?  Or is it just for assistance?  I've been debating picking it up just because I haven't gotten into any of the Souls games.  But this seems more accessible in some ways...is it?

This game is the definition of "difficult but fair" as are all the Souls games.  The difficulty lies in the fact you are dumped into a complex game with little to no direction or help from the game.  The game is not artificially hard.  You learn by trial and error for the most part and your deaths are lessons to be learned from and not something to fear or hate.  The game is really not that hard once you get the hang of it.  There is a point when all Souls player hit a plateau and everything finally clicks if you stick with it.

Once you learn the ins and outs of how the game/combat work you can actually breeze through the game for the most part.  It seems difficult, even unbeatable at times.  Especially when you run into the first boss but if you stick with it you will master the combat and take down that big guy with no problems.

That said, I am currently stuck in the game.  Not from an unbeatable boss, many have fallen in my wake, no I am stuck cause I don't know where to go next lol.  There are no markers, no waypoints and no one to show me the way.  The levels are a maze of secret passages and closed door that might now open but I'll have to wonder around till I find them lol.
