Xbox on it's deathbed...

Post by S7 Epic on Thu Apr 15, 2010 6:21 pm

Well, got 3 red rings today so it doesn't look good. I'll be operating on it tomorrow, see if I can bring it back to life. I've already ordered a new Elite though, so I should be back online Saturday at the latest, hopefully.

What sucks is that -

1) Conviction arrives tomorrow and i'll be unable to play it.

2) I can no longer afford the Fender Strat I was about to buy =(

Well, I kinda forgot to add Saturday delivery to the order, so ima ring up first thing tomorrow and see if I can change that since the box hasn't been dispatched yet.

Also, i'll be trying the RROD X-Clamp fix tomorrow, see if I can get my old box working.

Look forward to using HDMI, anyone used both HDMI and Component? Is there much improvement.

Well I mostly play on a crappy old TV cause my dad watches TV on the HDTV. There is huge difference between AV and HD, for component to HD though it is a still a good leap of improvement that you will see, it's not that big. For example on component cables you might get some grainy kinda of images at some points, on HD you'll never see that...ever. If the TV you have is a good one, it should be next to flawless.

Either way, leaves the component slots free for other stuff I guess.

Just placed my order for hardware I need to attempt to fix my old box. Should keep me entertained for a few hours, regardless of whether the fix works.

I liked HDMI for the time I used it simply cause it was like a USB cord for my TV. The Component RF cables with HD are pretty big. But also, for some reason HDMI would not let me adjust my Hi Definition settings to the highest variant.

I use the componet over HDMI as well. Component is still a digital signal, like HDMI. It's true that you can get 1080p over HDMI, but only 720p over Component, but the fact is all 360 games are programed at 720p (thus no Blu Ray required). So if you are playing at 1080p, it is just being upconverted. Most videophiles say it's better to play at the native resolution, in which I would agree. All this to say, it doen't really matter what you use for your video quality.

I like going with the optical audio as well (for Dolby Digital Surround), so that keeps me using component and not having to purchase the additonal adapter for the HDMI. Now HDMI will push Dolby Digital if you have a reciever that accepts it over HDMI. Most people route the HDMI to their TV directly, in which case you are only going to get the Dolby Pro-Logic, which is not a true surround sound.

Two things Epic...the fix works but only for a little while...you'll have to put heatsink on the chip again...over time...Second the HDMI cable does make a difference...I've noticed a big difference, the computer cable works fine too. Everyone has their own preference and that's cool too. Component has been blurry for me...might be the type of TV I have, but I have noticed the difference going to HDMI.
