TWITCH CEO ADMITS 'WE SCREWED UP' WITH NEW POLICIES

Post by S7 Sticky on Fri Aug 08, 2014 12:11 pm

Twitch's CEO has responded to criticism over the way the video streaming service introduced new policies affecting copyrighted music in videos.
Emmett Shear took to Reddit to do an AMA following criticism of the audio recognition technology that's been introduced to tackle unlicensed music in VODs. His chief purpose was to reassure fans that no such feature will be introduced to the livestreaming section of the site, and systems are being put in place to enable appeals should ambient and in-game music from games be wrongly flagged.

"We have no intention whatsoever of bringing audio-recognition to live streams on Twitch. This is a VOD-only change for Twitch," he said. "We have zero intention of flagging original in-game music.
"We do intend to flag copyrighted in-game music that's in Audible Magic's database. (This was unclear in the blog post, my apologies). In the cases where in-game music is being flagged incorrectly, we are working on a resolution and should have one soon. False positive flags will be unmuted."
Shear apologised about the poor communication stressing, "This was our bad." He also made clear that only two percent of video views on Twitch will be affected by the change, with 20 percent of VODs coming under fire.

The AMA was supplemented by a blog post, which explained the maximum time limit of highlights will be removed, along with the news that an appeal button is being added so you can challenge any videos that you believe have been muted incorrectly.
"We recognise that the system is not yet perfect. We want to make this system as fair and unobtrusive as possible, and we greatly appreciate your help," it reads.
Seeing as yesterday saw one of Twitch's own videos muted along with replays of Dota 2's The International Championships, it seems Twitch itself will be making use of the button as well.
