DOCSIS 3 Modem

Post by DeadSockPuppet on Fri Jul 18, 2014 7:59 pm

We're changing up our cable and as part of our new bundle with Comcast they're upping our internet speed from 25mbps to 105mbps (estimated) and they're changing out modem to a DOCSIS 3 modem for the service.  Currently we lease a modem from them that's like 5-6+ years old for $8/mo and we'll pay the same lease for the new modem.

My question is since the program is for 24 months, is it 1.) worth buying a DOCSIS 3 modem, and if yes, 2.) how much are they, 3.) what is a good suggestion for one to buy and 4.) where should I get one?  Doing the math, we'll spend $192 on the lease, assuming we only keep it for the 24 months.  Lastly, if we do buy a modem and later drop our speed, can the DOCSIS 3 modem handle slower speeds for internet?

I would check D-Link and Netgear out of the list below. I would always recommend buying your own if at all possible. As for specifics about Comcast i don't really know as I have not have the privilege of using them as my provider...

Out of the entire list I have this one and Cisco is always a safe bet.

This is the DPC3010 not the one above which is the DPC3080. I am not sure of the difference if any exists. I would still follow the list they have provided and stick with one of the well known brands.

I got a Motorolla DOCSIS 3 last November at Best Buy for about $100. It's been working great so far, and I did get a ton more speed with the switch out.

The Reviews are solid.

So a good one is like $100.  So, I guess that would make it worth getting.  I'll have to see what they bring to make sure I get something similar.

Depending on your area I'd be tentative on buying rather than leasing. Having worked at an ISP, modems die, a lot. Some people get lucky and keep theirs for 5+ years, a LOT don't. So if you buy one, you'll want to spend an additional $100+ and connect it to a UPS that has a battery backup. Otherwise you'll be susceptible to brownouts on top of surges.

PS: If it's cable internet, you can also get power surges through the cable itself.

Didn't think about that.  If that's the case, doesn't necessarily make sense to but one for like $100+ and a UPS for like $100+ when u could have to replace one or both during the 2 yr plan.  Only a good deal if there's no issues like that over the contract.  Some good food for thought.

Yeah, and from my experience, it's very hit-and-miss for who has the issues. I go with the rental myself. That way if anything goes wrong, I can just swap it out for a new one without having to bother troubleshooting too much.

I think that's the route we'll go.  Much easier to have them deal with it.  That and up until recently when our ancient modem started acting up we rarely had any issues with Comcast's hardware.

So, Comcast came today and set up my new modem and everything.  All is working good, except my laptop won't connect to the internet.  I know the problem is with the computer because the PS4 and iPhones connect to the network and internet with no problems.

Before he left the tech tried messing with the network settings on the laptop but to no avail.  When we called Comcast they think that it might be that the network card in the computer is old enough to the point that it doesn't work with the WPA2-PSK security that the modem is using.

The tech support line from Comcast gave me a number to call for the computer manufacturer (ASUS) to find out the max security setting that the computer can use.  I have no problem doing that but I was hoping someone might have some suggestions to try that might be simple to possibly fix this.

Find out what make/model your NIC (Network Interface Card) is and download the latest drivers from the manufacturer website. 99% of the time there's an update to support newer wireless tech.

Turned out it wasn't a problem with the security level, rather it was something to do with how the computer was connecting to the internet.  The Comcast help center have me the IP for Google and I was able to connect.  We ended up logging into the command prompt as admin and making an adjustment at the netsh prompt and now it's working fine.
