Anyone else?

Post by Atrum on Sun Mar 30, 2014 2:55 pm

I know a few other guys here are still doing school of some sort (grad, post-grad, etc). I recently purchased a rather large whiteboard (well, made) to go on the wall by my desk as I was burning through far too much paper doing math equations. Anyone else ran in to something similar? I feel like it's a sign I should stop doing math entirely before I become 'that guy'  Laughing

Nah I just burned $600 on a tablet with a built in pen half way through the year.

What math?

I already have a wacom I use for art, I like having the whiteboard on the wall.

Nothing special, just Calc II at the moment.

I had to buy four more large whiteboards because just one wasn't enough for quantum mechanics. Plus manipulations of the neutron transport equation are awful:

Also, what's wrong with Calc II? That was my favorite of the calcs, it's so mechanical. I actually enjoyed the days where my professor would throw down tons of integrals and see who could finish the most in 10 mins. I always won  Razz

Don't get me wrong, I love me some physics, but you kids put me to shame.  That's way above my head.

I don't doubt it. Considering I'm not doing anything math related in my degree, it's already pretty tough. lol

Well if you ever need help with Calc, let me know. My old professor used to call me "The Integrator" lol

I mean I don't mind Calc but it took me way to long to understand. For some reason math with numbers was always easier to me then math with symbols and words. I personally don't see myself using Calc in any field I go into and that was another deterrent as I didn't see any real benefit of knowing it well. I also haven't really enjoyed math since Trig / College algebra. Another thing that has to do with it is the teachers at my school are either really good or absolutely horrible. The unfortunate thing is most of the teachers I have in my major are trash because they know what they are trying to teach, but have little to no teaching skills. Its probably do to WSU being mainly a research institution. Example - my thermo teacher this semester on average says umm and uhhh 600+ times in a 75 minute lecture ( me and a friend counted ). Honestly if I could do college over again I would still pick WSU but way more aware of the teachers I am enrolling with. My favorite classes so far while at WSU - Circuits, Circuits 2, Electrical Circuits, Object Oriented Programming ( Java ), CATIA classes ( through my internship ).

Circuits classes are very heavy in calc and differential equations though

Good Luck Atrum....you can do it!!!

When going through grad and undergrad school many moons ago (B.S. Comp. Sc. and MBA) it was like a setup. Unbelievably I had people complaining about math and the numerous classes we needed for credit. Like I told them, if you don't like math you shouldn't have signed up for this...LOL

Math I enjoy. Frustrating at times until topics click but it comes fairly easily for me. I think the worst class I took was 3 years ago, Earth Science. I had no idea we had some hardcore rock-nut teacher that wanted us to know the chemical compositions of all the main rocks (there are like 70) and be able to identify them in 5-10 seconds. But hey, now I can tell what type of rocks I see when hiking. lol

I've always loved geology so that sounds awesome to me. I really badly wanted to take a class my JC offered that sent us out to the desert to take rock samples and analyze them, but I never had time for it  Sad

All things geology related interest me. Mineralogy, petrology, field mapping, sedimentology, oceanography, geophysics, environmental geology, hydrogeology, engineering geology, petroleum geology, etc...

But as a child I wanted to do something totally different.
Become an archaeologist  Rolling Eyes Started by finding old Indian arrow tips in Florida as a child. Really should have followed that dream, but I don't think they make very much.

I would say the reason I enjoy circuits more then the math classes I have take is the understand of what something like a motherboard is made out of. I personally would love to build my own computer from scratch not by buying components but by making everything, soldering, connecting, and overall my own DIY. My main reason for becoming a Computer Engineering major is so I can have a taste of both programming and the understanding behind the hardware of computers. I know I'm in the right field when I can say I got goosbumps during the GTC videos of Nvidia and the possibilities of tomorrows technologies. Hopefully I can play a part in that future when i graduate. As for math like Calculus i would say if I took over Calc and diffy Q i would enjoy it way more then the first time but just like Atrum or anyone else i get frustrated with thing that don't come easy to me.

As for things related to geology but off planet would be astronomy, I have always been a sci fi and fantasy reader so finding something that might show or support possibilities for other forms of intelligent life would we awesome to study.

Yeah I wish money didn't matter. I really wanted to major in astrophysics but there's just no money in it outside of teaching.
