Is Haswell any better than Ivy Bridge in gaming?

Post by S7 Sticky on Sat Jun 01, 2013 11:48 am

they compared Haswell Xb1 cpu to the latest and greatest intel CPU out there
and the numbers are not that far apart which is EPIC cant wait to see games like BF4

they used bar charts to make it easy to see

The GPU will likely be the bottleneck of the X1.

I heard the hardest part of the new Haswell chips is having a PSU that supports it. With having only experience in intel I would love to see a build that includes this chip.

Isn't the GPU and CPU built in to the same chip on the X1?

Not sure how that would be possible but it is really cool to see they didn't skimp on the hardware so far. A CPU/GPU hybrid would be a inovational wouldn't it?

Here is a good video explaining and giving an overview of the product.

It's a single chip, yeah but the GPU and CPU cores are still seperate and the PS4 has more cores AND they run at a higher clock rate.

The PS4 looks to be a balls-out gaming console, other functionality will be fitted around that. The Xbox One is built more like a PC...from two years ago.

It'll take a while, I think but eventually the PS4 will eek out a performance gap. That said, by that time MS could be cloud processing our games so who knows...?

Now I'm not much of a pc architecture person but based on that video and other things I have read I think the haswell processor can out preform the sandy bridge if set up and managed properly. The article that Sticky posted they didn't really use the best games to do this completion with and the newest/ best graphics one crisis 3 the haswell out preformed the sandy bridge. I know battlefield three with the huge maps and good graphics the sandy bridge for the most part outperformed the haswell but I think that the performance is close enough in that article that over time the haswell on the Xbox 1 will out preform the sandy bridge.
I agree epic and think that the cloud processing could be huge if they do it right.

On a side note the Haswell CPU is now officially available for PC as-well.

It's also a bit silly to compare console specs vs PC. All primary processing and resource allocation is completely different.

My reference to the PC of two years ago was just some passive aggressiveness to express my disappointment about not using cutting edge, or at least newer, hardware.

Ahh, a la the 8GB DDR5 the PS4 will have?

I go through the same thing each generation. I want some crazy components I haven't even heard of that somehow they can mass produce cheaply.
This time around I'm okay with things. Definitely fast enough that it will be a big jump over the current generation.

You know those punchy little GTX 560 cards? Well, they each put out around 1.2 Teraflops of processing power. The PS4 puts out 1.8. The GTX 680 sat in the PC next to me puts out 3.1.

The Bandwidth of that GDDR5 is ~173 GB/S. My 680 gets 192 GB/S. The 560 puts out 128 GB/S. Also, GDDR5 has suck latency, so whilst it'll be good for Gfx, when it has to double up for actual CPU usage, it's going to have it's disadvantages.

So, spec-wise, even the PS4 isn't exactly edgy. And whilst I know that comparatively, consoles can make much, much more from their resources, I'd have liked to have seen some more exciting stuff.

That said... http://www.oxm.co.uk/54748/xbox-one-specs-are-boosted-by-the-equivalent-of-three-xbox-ones-in-the-cloud/
