I have it and played a decent amount. Haven't been on in a few months but would probably play a game or two.

If you are talking about the new AoE II HD, you have to add friends through steam. Just pull up your buddy list, and at the bottom there is a "+ Add friends" search for them and add, then you will use your Steam friend's list in game.
