My First PC

Post by S7 Panzer on Sun Mar 31, 2013 5:18 pm

Well its time for me to make my first PC. With my Alienware laptop hitting 3.5 years old it showing age. All my local friends have created their own computer so I thought I might as well get my hands dirt while saving a good chunk of money.

Here is the PC parts ill post up hyperlinks when I have some time. Im slowly getting all the components I can test without buying everything at once.

Accually the reason it turned into a barbicue is because they gave me the incorrect power supply so the pc didn't get enough juice resulting in some short.
I'm going to choose between one of the two graphics cards but I just thought I might as well go big or go home on my first build so when I do replace components I only have to replace stuff one at a time.

Overall nice, my notes:

-Great mobo choice

-No SSD? Get one. It's silly not to have one these days, especially with the specs you're buying.

-There is almost no reason for you to get a sound card. The one built in to the mobo is going to be more than good enough for what you do.

-You don't need dual video cards. 1 of those is overkill for your specs. 2 is just silly

-If you're going with the dual video cards:
Upgrade to an i7
Get 32GB of RAM
Get a 1000W PSU

-Personal preference, I like the antec Dark Fleet cases. Yours is sweet, just a thought.

Re: My First PC

Post by S7 Panzer on Mon Apr 01, 2013 1:37 am

Nah read my second post Atrum its one of those two GPUs that I'm going to buy I just can't decide which one. Also I keep looking at SSDs and I'm just not confident with the success rate for overall performance. Plus whenever I start up windows I usually walk away and do something else tell its done booting up. I just can't justify buying and SSD unless its 128 GB or more and that is going to put me at $210 if I buy a good brand. I thought about buying a 30 GB SSD for windows OS alone but its still around $50 at the cheapest. Its going to be a good 2-3 months before save up enough money and buy the remaining parts.

So far I bought:
Gaming mouse (its black) - http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/g600-mmo-gaming-mouse?crid=7
monitor - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014299
case - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119263
fans (5 of them)- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835209001
PSU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153174
OS - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986
hard drive - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236339

Things still to buy:
Processor - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504
Memory - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233144
DVD reader - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136259
EVGA GPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130824
OR
Galaxy GPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162118
Audio card ( maybe ) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132020

Question:
The memory should i just go all out or stick with what I selected I'm not talking about usable GB instead should I buy a better model DD3 1600+ . I'm not sure what the mother board supports.

The way you stated about the GPU choices atrum do you mean the GPU is to good for the build or its just overkill to get 2. I only plan on getting one because with the current mobo it would bottleneck the performance, or so I'm told.

Last question about SSDs. Here is some of the SSDs I had looked at but I'm still not sure.

Samsung big - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147193
Samsung Small - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147186

I'm thinking Samsung because they have consistent positive reviews if anything, but should I buy it only to hold my OS or go big with a 250 GB or more and store games like LoL.

Also I should be able to post picture of building the computer maybe even a sped up video of use putting it together, for all I know it could help future members of S7 create their own computers. My current plan is to buy everything but the GSU because its the most expensive part (probably gobble up an entire paycheck). Then when I have the money buy it slap it in the already finished build and then install drivers, and BAM done. Ill keep you post on when I get new parts but for now its just a waiting game for my internship to give me my paycheck bi weekly.

I have an 830 SSD in mine. Seriously, they make such an improvement that you'd be silly not to get one.

Get the EVGA board. Theres not much between the two but EVGAs tools and customer service are leagues ahead.

Don't buy that sound card, the mobo one will be exactly the same. If you want to add in a sound card later, get a good one like mine..., they're the only ones that'll make a worthwhile difference. Also, unless you also have good headphones and/or speakers, don't bother. When I listen to FLAC music through my AudioTechnicas the world is a much happier place, so I'm definitely not against sound card, you just need to have the right setup and usage in order for them to be worthwhile.

I have the same SSD as Epic, I was skeptical myself but it's completely worth it. If you're using it as a regular drive you won't have issues with it slowing down any time soon.

The only reason you would see a rapid speed deterioration is from A) a terrible SSD, or B) running a setup with a 10k HDD and use the SSD as a cache drive to boost overall performance.

In conclusion, drop that sound card to save some $, get an SSD, and win.

I have the "Small" one you listed. It runs Windows, and my primary games (League, Steam games, SC2, etc)

If it fills up, you can just dump files to one of the Hard Drives.

Well it looks like ill be getting the CPU and processor as a early birthday present on Friday do to a combo deal and ill get the SSD and disk reader at the same time. I decided to wait on the GPU because Nvidia to releasing the 700 series and ill just buy a GTX 770 and slap that in sometime in late May when Evga starts retailing them. Hopefully I can create a video putting it together sometime next week if everything goes as planned.

Successful build.

Ill post up the video some time in the future after I edit it and speed it up. I might put in a voice overview but we decided to have the camera on the build but never really comment about anything.
