Two Versions of the Next Xbox

Post by S7 Sticky on Sat Nov 24, 2012 8:00 pm

ill only buy the full xbox gaming one i dont need to blow money on a low tech xbox media center
A new report suggests that Microsoft's next generation Xbox will come in two very different models.

The first is the console we're all expecting, providing true next-generation gaming experiences, while the other will be a more affordable unit aimed at the casual market. The latter is said to use Windows 8 as the basis of its operating system, and won't be able to run the latest triple-A titles, but will support downloadable casual games from Xbox Live.

So it will function more like a set-top box, or an Apple TV, allowing a greater number of consumers to experience the console's growing range of entertainment apps. Apparently, the next-gen Xbox will be an 'always on' device that starts up almost instantly, letting you resume your game with little downtime.

This latest report comes from The Verge, which cites "multiple sources familiar with Redmond's plans". (Redmond, if you were wondering, is the location of Microsoft's head quarters.) It also claims that this twin SKU approach is part of a larger Microsoft strategy to ensure that its core Xbox software is 'scalable' to run on a variety of devices. There's even talk of making it so that a phone could be capable of delivering a full Xbox Live experience. It has also looked into including licensing core Xbox functionality into television sets.

It's believed that both devices will be announced sometime in 2013 and made available before the end of the year.

Would be cool if the 'casual' version could be used to support multi screen games (forza)

I would assume any games that would support triple screen would be considered "Triple A" games, which the casual console already says won't support titles like that. We'll see, but I'd be shocked if the casual console had any kind of support for something like that. I really think the difference between the two will be quite a lot.

'Latest' being the key word there? Does that mean that when CoD12359 comes out CoD12358 will no longer be the latest, and thus playable? Laughing

To have CoD run up to its 12359 release within the lifetime of the new console, they'd probably have to release a new CoD game every... four hours or so. Which honestly wouldn't surprise me. haha

I'm thinking as we all know Micro$oft has always wanted to be the main center of entertainment in your living room. They've decided there's an audience that doesn't want to play 360 games at all really, or at least they want to test this theory. They think some (or enough) people just watch Netflix on their xbox or play arcade games, MLB.TV, poker, etc. and just use it as a box/tool to channel movies and entertainment not to play video games.

Think more of a single ladies home type thing. Younger lady/couple not really hardcore into gaming but would use it for Blu-Ray, Netflix, etc. --more of an app friendly device than game friendly device.

The only ting I know of PS3 can do that Xbox can't is Blu Ray.
If you're talking about something else you lost me. But remember a decent blu ray player @Walmart is $80...while buying a PS3 just to watch a blu ray movie will cost you $300.

ps3 and xbox do the same thing

some of this list xbox does as well but i think most people think all a ps3 does is blue ray and game

blue ray
netflix
PS3 is region-free for gaming
use of external hard drives any size
NFL Season Ticket
crackle
huluplus
amazon instan video
vudu
anime channel
MLB.tv
NHL Game center
neon ally (anime channel)
college sports
comes with its own video editor and uploader
can play across ps3 and vita ,psp no need to buy more then one copy
internet browser
free online gaming (no lag in my mind better then live ) plus alot more scrubs
so for a none hard core gamer ps3 would be better no need to pay to play online if you dont do it alot

also i bought my ps3 for 150 bucks at a local store (not a big name store )

i also do game on my ps3 which i think is nice only having 1 disc when some xbox games are 2 or even 3 disc (perk of having blue ray)
