Base level spring rates

Post by Lickwid Apex on Mon Nov 12, 2012 2:58 pm

A couple nights ago, someone asked for a good place to start with spring rates to begin tweaking.

I use an excel formula when the car I'm tuning does not exist in current distributions. If you have Excel or Open Office enter the following into the cells.

A1-"weight"
B1-"% Front"
C1-"Front Spring"
D1-"Rear Spring"

A2- Enter the weight of your vehicle here.
B2- Enter percentage of front weight in decimal format. example: for 53% enter .53 in this cell
C2- "=(A2*B2)/2
D2- "=(A2*B3)/2
B3- "=1-B2"

If you'll input what is in the quotes (not the quotes themselves) into the designated cells you should see a good starting point for spring rates. This should help make the car feel even footed to get you started. This is a HUGE help for when you convert any vehicle's drive train. FWD to AWD or FWD to RWD. Good luck fellas.

Good stuff Liquid. If I understand this correctly, to simplify...

Front Springs = Weight of the car, multiplied by the front distribution, divided by 2.

Rear Springs = Weight of the car, multiplied by the remainder of front distribution, divided by 2.

Example:

Car weight = 2,900 lbs
Front Distribution = %52

Front Springs = (2900 x .52)/2 = 754 lbs
Rear Springs = (2900 x .48)/2 = 696 lbs

Correct?

Interesting starting point, I'll have to look how this compares to some of my tunes to see how close they are.

PS: That's what I got from it Zak.

Sweet! I'm getting close to getting away from a tuning calculator with all the help you guys are putting up. I already have my bases for about half the settings and this is one more I can mark off. Thanks!

Yup, you got it. Please keep in mind, this "should" set up a relatively balanced platform for the cars weight to rest on. This does not take into account wheel weight or the dynamics of body roll. That's why iss juss a startin' point.

Yeah but that forces me to learn to tune springs and gives me a point to start from.
