New Rig Incoming...

Post by S7 Epic on Sat Jun 23, 2012 5:20 pm

Sooo, I have decided it is time for an upgrade, so I've been doing my research and have put together this....

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (£257.08 @ Ebuyer)
CPU Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC14PE 60.1 CFM CPU Cooler (£66.98 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme6 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard (£144.99 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£121.97 @ Dabs)
Hard Drive: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£70.00 @ Ebuyer)
Hard Drive: Samsung 830 Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Disk (£156.99 @ Dabs)
Case: Silverstone RV01-BW ATX Full Tower Case (£165.44 @ Scan.co.uk)
Power Supply: Corsair 850W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply (£119.69 @ Ebuyer)
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-B123L/RSBP Blu-Ray Reader, DVD/CD Writer (£48.98 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £1152.12

I might go for an Extreme9 mobo instead, I need to get a better look at them first though.

It is missing a GPU as I already have one that handles everything I need it for, I will most likely upgrade later on once the prices of the Nvidia 680 drop so I can throw two of those in with SLI.

In addition to the parts above, I'll more than likely be throwing in a Bigfoot Killer 2100 network card and a Xonar Essence ST sound card.

I'm putting the Crucial M4 in my system that I'm building right now, very solid SSD.
Looks almost identical to my build. I'm going with the Z77 mobo, I'm going to get the Yellow Lanboy case though, it just looks amazing.
Also, I'm going with an i5. For my system I don't have a real need for the i7.

Just ordered my parts:

ASRock Z77 Extreme6 mobo
OCZ Fatal1ty 750W PSU
i5-3570k 3.4GHz CPU
Samsung 830 Series 128GB SSD
Antec DF-85 Case
EVGA GeForce 560Ti Video Card
Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600
Cooler Master Hyper212+ CPU Cooler
ASUS CD/DVD Drive
Several Seagate HDD's of various size
Total cost: $1130

It's funny, I had all of this in my shopping cart when I saw this post. Only recent changes were going from the i5-2500k to the 3570k. Only a $10 difference so it was worth it. Also changed to a full tower case and a different ssd.
Also had to change out the PSU as the Antec I had in there suddenly stopped having it's discount and jumped up $40.

OCZ Make great PSU's. I have a Stealth XStream in both mine and the family computer (basically a Sims 3 machine...) and I have loved it. Quiet, stable voltages, no problems after powercuts, anything like that. Had I not heard soooo much good sh1t about the HX850, you can bet it would have been an OCZ in this too.

My 830 SSD (plus PSU) came today and it looks sick, so small and light too.

I'm currently deciding if I want to watercool my rig or not. .. That said, upon writing this, I think I've pretty much decided to stick with air.... Maybe take a look at that Coolermaster V10 TEC cooler. It wouldn't exactly fit my colour scheme but for the performance, I think I could overlook that.

Its funny you bring up the Coolermaster V10 TEC. For now I'm saving money but if I notice my system getting to hot thats what I plan on upgrading to.
I've never had problems with air cooling before. So unless I were to get an ultra high end pc I see not reason to switch.

The other option I was considering was the Noctua
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608018

Has very solid reviews.

I actually looked into the V10 and tbh, it's only about as good as a closed w/c loop - not a bad thing BUT I'd rather have the w/c (or go all the way with a custom loop) than have a such a big piece of metal hanging off my mobo for pretty much the same price.

I've spent the past few hours deciding on my cooler and I have finally gone ahead and ordered a Thermalright Silver Arrow and a syringe full of Coolaboratory LiquidMetal Pro, so temp wise, I think I'll be as far as I can go on air cooling. Especially considering the stack cooling of the Raven Case. So, yeah. Pretty happy with the final decision.

Yeah, I mainly like the aesthetics on the v10.

Looks like we'll have to play some sc2 now that we both are getting new pcs.

Yeah, you gonna have yours ready for the weekend? I should be building mine friday night/saturday morning, assuming all the parts come.

Luckily newegg is staffed by super-ballers, so the parts shipped the same day I ordered and should be here friday afternoon. So I'll build then.

Well, the delivery guy came to the house whilst I was at work but my mother and sister were both in, plus, the gardener was in the front. He knocked but nobody heard and then went to leave. The gardener, however, told him that there definitely were people in and the try again...but he just freakin\' left.

He brought the parcel.

Was told people were in.

And left anyway!!!

WHAT TYPE OF ASSHATT SERVICE IS THAT????!

So, I won't have my rig until mon/tuesday now but I'm not sure I'll even get the thing build until maybe next weekend. I'm working 7-7, so between work, eating, sleeping, washing, I don't have much time to be building PC's. What's more is that I had set aside this weekend for it too.

Anyway, let me know when you have yours up and running as I'll probably hop on SC2 anyway. My current PC breezes through SC2, so that isn't an issue.

That really sucks. I've had that happen with packages so I usually have them delivered to work. I pretty much live there and on the off chance that I'm not there the people I work with will contact me if something comes for me.

I'll be on SC2 later. Also, here are some pics. Still a lot to do:
-Get cable to split fan power, 2 fans in the front did not have slots.
-Sand down and repaint side and front panels. (going with a red gradient/black with white highlight colour scheme) with glass finish
-Add interior LEDs. (Red track along base, directional from available slots near front, aimed inward)

Ty, Ty. Should be solid for a while, and fairly easy upgrades to keep it relevant (CPU, MORE SSD!, SLI Video)

I'll post some 'in progress' photos when I'm working on the aesthetics.

Yeah, I'm always bouncing between LoL and SC2 now. If I don't have people on for LoL, I try to get a couple games of sc2 in.

Re: New Rig Incoming...

Post by S7 Epic on Sun Jul 01, 2012 7:31 pm

Decided that I am going to put in a new gfx solution after all. Makes no sense not to have all the power of an i7, stupidly fast RAM and a best-in-class SSD if I can't pwn DX11 games and FINALLY be able to play BF3 at a solid framerate.

So, I'm throwing in two GTX 680's (MSI Lightning OC version). Going to wait a month before I buy them though, I want to see if there are any sales/price drops as the price for two is going to be ~£1100 ($1700). Also, I have a client release to finish at work, so chances are I'll not get too much gaming time.

Furthermore, I'm upgrading my net, so hopefully by the time I can tear it up, maxed out in BF3, I'll be running on d:48mb/u:10mb... =)
