Lifting Injury question

Post by Atrum on Fri Mar 23, 2012 9:07 pm

So question for any people with some lifting experience.

Basic summary: Pulled/Strained/etc something in my left forearm. Basically it hurts whenever I pick something up or set something down. Still noticeable while doing the motions but mainly on pickup/setdown. First noticed it on Front Dumbbell Raises, but it's by far most severe in Straight Bar Curls, and EZ Bar Curls. Bascially Bicep work.

I assume it's something with the tendons so atm plan to:
-Stop lifting for 1-3 weeks until pain is gone
-Ice/Apply Biofreeze regularly

If anyone has more experience with this let me know if there's something better I could be doing, or if a Brace is necessary for recovery.

man that sucks, I've hurt myself plenty working out, sounds to me that you either pulleds a tendon or ligiment. lets hope that you didn't tear it! ice it down/cold compress for about 45min every couple hours for a day or two take about 3 ibuprohon every 10 hours. if its still real bad after about 4 or 5 days go to the doctor, Ive got a lot of bad parts from torn muscles that i never let heal correctly from my younger days that ache let a mofo now. wait at least a full week after the pain is gone and go lite

My dad suffers from tendinitis in his hands and regularly wears a brace, so if you are doing activities that regularly force you to use that tendon then yes a brace would be recommended. Now the procedure for correctly healing a tendon other then putting the least amount of strain on it I really don't know.

Best of luck healing up that tendon, I hate tendon injures I much rather have a broken bone, heals up stronger then before.

Take it easy for awhile and ice it down. Also might want to look into some sports massage therapy and/or deep tissue with a focus on arms.

Braces can help but it depends on the injury and how often you plan on wearing it. Prolonged use of a brace can actually hurt your recovery time but can help further injury or strain when doing activities.

Yeah, don't think it's torn. Talked to a PT and he tried wrist movements that should have hurt if it was torn. Suppose I'll just be careful to not hurt it more and let it recover. Thanks for the posts.

Hope that everything works out for you with this. Sports injuries can be such a pain in the ass.

You think after marriage jerking would take a decrease, if only slightly.

You think that by jerking so much you wouldn't get an arm injury as easy.

Wow, this took a dirty turn. LOL
I wouldn't wear a brace all the time. Take a month off of lifting, then use a brace only when lifting for a month or so. Is it up near the elbow kinda on the ouside? For that, rather than a brace, I would recommend wearing a tight band like you see pro atheletes wearing. The tendons in the forearm will slowly tear away from the elbow under repetitive strenuous exercise, so wearing one may help mitigate further damage and definitely helps with the pain. I've suffered from this due to heaving one-arm throws and awkward saves as goalkeeper and it can be excrutiating. Definitely stop lifting for a while - this is not the kind of pain you just man-up to and work through.

Yeah definitely not near the elbow, a la tennis elbow. It's pretty well centered. I'm giving it a couple weeks and then going to slowly test it out. Pretty sure it's just a strain on the tendons. Not doing a brace, if I did it wouldn't be for anything other than remind me to not pick stuff up.
