Re: Literature Thread

Post by DeadSockPuppet on Sat Mar 10, 2012 10:11 pm

I generally don't find that any movie/tv adaptation lives up to a book.

That being said, I'll look at the Hunger Games books as one entity and the movies as a stand alone or separate entity. Basically I won't compare them against each other but rather against similar products in their same format.

For example, I'll compare the quality, creativeness, etc against other book series and I'll compare the books in the series against each other. I'll do the same with the movies. I find that doing this will allow me to enjoy both on their own, rather than spend a bunch of time picking at the differences and be mad that the movies don't live up to the books.

Since I don't get any time to game or read, at least not recently, the wife and I started watching GoT on On-Demand and so far it seems like a fairly interesting story. We're just into the first episode but I think this will be one of the shows that we pick up, since House is in its final season.

Well I finished the Percy Jackson: The Olympians series and enjoyed it very much. I felt Rick Riodan had a good style of writing that captures the Greek god mythology while providing an engaging story line that spanned 5 books. I also started reading the first " Hero's of Olympus " and after the first chapter it already sucked me back into the life of a demigod at camp half-blood.

I read The Call of the Wild by Jack London not too long ago. It was one of the best books I've read in awhile. It was really cool to read a book from the perspective of a dog. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves dogs or just wants to read a great book.

Finished up Hero's of Olympus, its a great book continuing the Percy Jackson series with more detail towards the Roman Mythology of the Gods. This book provided a different feel and perspective for the reader giving each character a chance to narrate the story. Whenever a chapter began the Character narrating / hearing they're perspective would be the title. The next book in this in the series is "Son of Neptune" which goes back to Percy Jackson's perspective.

Currently reading two books, one "Revan" book 3 in the Star Wars knights of the Old republic book series. It leaves off 2 years after the first KOTOR game elaborating on Revan traversing the farthest reaches of the galaxy for what remains of a small but strong Sith empire. I'm also close to finishing "Son of Neptune" Book 2 in the "Hero's of Olympus". To bad the next book will not be hitting shelves tell Fall 2012.

I think Game of Thrones is an impressive adaptation of the book. Read them years ago and still very much enjoy the tv series.

I'm a big fan of seeing a different take on a series. I've read the Harry Potter books since they started coming out and even though they sprinted through a few of the books to make them fit in to 1 movie I still love watching them.

I usually like to read the books first so I know more about the story as I watch the movie. It is nice to stumble upon a movie like Percy Jackson, then go and find out the books are far better.

Proof that reading is fundamental. Just a few years ago Panzer wasn't able to string together a coherent sentence.
Now he's giving in-depth comprehensive literary reviews. I love it!! cheers

I hate Apple products. The only think I use apple for is to download music legally whenever that urge occurs.

I like to walk in to an apple store with a giant bag full of $1 bills. Then ask them a questions and start throwing handfuls of money at them so there is a constant shower of cash. If it's a difficult question I step up my game to $5 bills and a few hours of showering them in money they advise me to buy a new lame upgraded version of the same product.

That being said 90% of my forum posts are from an iphone. Suspect

Back on topic, I finished both "Son of Neptune" and "Revan". "Revan" had what some people would consider a cliffhanger / unknown ending for our hero Revan. It concluded all the questions you might have had for where Revan had gone after KOTOR1 and during KOTOR2. Now "Son of Neptune" was another great read adding onto the lush story that is the Percy Jackson series. With 3 more books still in the works for the 5 book series " Hero's of Olympus" I can only hope the series will keep up its awesome ability to tie Greek and Roman Mythology into its story.

Very nice panzer, so the Heroes of Olympus series is not all released? I'll wait until they all come out to start on them.

Currently reading 11/22/63by Stephen King - not bad and I haven't ever read anything with a similar plot. Basically a dude goes back in time to try and change a very significant event in American history. So far so good.

Finished Just After Sunset. Most of the short stories in that were really good, a couple were too predictable though, and one was pretty much unreadable for me.

That's the one about the Kennedy assassination, right? I hear that's pretty good.
