Literature Thread

Post by PootyPoo22 on Wed Feb 22, 2012 9:12 pm

After seeing the thread about The Hunger Games, I think we should have a book thread. I know reading takes up valuable gaming time but I know I'm not the only one here who reads. I'm currently trying to tackle two books at once. I'm reading one of the many physical books I own that I haven't read, and one of the free books I've gotten for my Kindle. Right now it's A Game of Thrones and The Call of the Wild. Both are pretty good so far but I'm only about 2.5 chapters into A Game of Thrones so I know it's going to get better. Anyway, what are you guys reading?

I'm trying to catch up on my Time magazine subscription. I got a couple weeks behind during Xmas and I'm trying to get on track. It doesn't help that I read them cover to cover.

I'm reading ccna study guide by Todd lammle. Wish I had time for anything else.
When I do get some down time I will be continuing my reread of the wheel of time books.

After finishing the Hunger Games I really have no books to read unless I pick up a completely different series. My two big series are Halo and Splinter cell which have both either stopped making books or are in the process of making a new book.

Any suggestions on other series to pick up? I'm a big science fiction reader and enjoy fiction with real world boundaries. I also have Red Storm Rising collecting dust if that is really worth the 652 page read.

Pick up the Shannara series. There's like 20 books and if you start with the Word/void (I think those are the first ones) they start in current day with Running With Demons and end up going to a fantasy realm. I haven't read all of them but what I have read are excellent. Here's a site that has the complete chronological list of the books:

http://www.goodreads.com/series/43574-shannara

I'm reading the 'Malazan Book of the Fallen' series by Steven Erikson.

I've read all but the newest Game of Thrones, which I am waiting for on paperback.

I really, really enjoyed the Codex Alera series too.

The 'Wizards First Rule/Legend of the Seeker' books are also a really great read. Far, far, far better than the sh1tty TV versions.

Some of us can understand and comprehend those designs and hieroglyphs that come of paper and electronic media and we "read" these for fun. Probably too complex of a process for you, you should just keep to trolling!

If you guys like reading the Young Adult genre (for example, The Hunger Games), I highly suggest John Green. I recently finished his newest book, The Fault in Our Stars, and absolutely loved it. He's really good at writing from the high-school-age perspective. All the books he's written are very good. He also has a pretty good YouTube channel with his brother www.youtube.com/vlogbrothers.

Also, if any of you read quite a bit, you should checkout www.goodreads.com . It helps you keep track of and rate all the books you've read and want to read and makes suggestions based on what you've read. And you can add friends to see what they're reading. If any of you join feel free to add me as a friend.

I'm not much into reading, but when I was I wanted something easy and fun to read.

If you want an easy and fun read, pick up the various Star Wars Novels. You can find a time line for them and read them in order if you like, but Timothy Zahn's, Thrawn Trilogy is what you must read first.

Otherwise I would say my favorite book from when I was in High School has to be Louis L'Amour's The Walking Drum.

From Amazon-

"Here is an historic adventure of extraordinary power waiting to sweep you away to exotic lands as one of the most popular writers of our time conquers new storytelling worlds. Louis L'Amour has been best known for his ability to capture the spirit and drama of the authentic American West. Now he guides his readers to an even more distant frontier -- the enthralling lands of the 12th century.

At the center of The Walking Drum is Kerbouchard, one of L'Amour's greatest heroes. Warrior, lover, scholar, Kerbouchard is a daring seeker of knowledge and fortune bound on a journey of enormous challenge, danger and revenge. Across the Europe, the Russian steppes and through the Byzantine wonder of Constantinople, gateway to Asia, Kerbouchard is thrust into the heart of the treacheries, passions, violence and dazzling wonders of a magnificent time. From castle to slave gallery, from sword-racked battlefields to a princess's secret chamber, and ultimately, to the impregnable fortress of the Valley of Assassins, The Walking Drum is a powerful adventure of an ancient world you will find every bit as riveting as Louis L'Amour's stories of the American West."

Everyone I know that has ever read it loved the book. Again, this was around 20 years ago since I read it, and I was into stuff like the Robert E. Howards Conan Books too.

Little less for the Shannara series, they're like 300pg books and there's like 26 of them.

Yeah, I also found them to 'feel good' books. I was pretty much never unhappy with where the storyline went, unlike GoT, where I was very unhappy that Eddard got killed off so quickly. I understand why though and it was very symbolic, but still....

You've not watched the TV series? I assumed you had. My bad. Once you get further into the book you'll realise it's not too big of a deal, so don't focus too much about it. He's more of a character to guide you into the series gently, then once you're used to the gritty, harsh reality, he is disposed of....

Speaking of Mangas I'm currently reading: Naruto, Bleach, and Deadman World. I personally like Deadman World out all 3 the most.

I started reading "Enclave", its set in a world much like Metro 2033 ( post apocalyptic society ). I'm about 80% through the book and it has not lost my attention yet. I read the sample to "City of Bones" but after reading review it seems to be a Harry Potter remake. I also took time to read the samples of "Wizard's First Rule" and "The eye of the world" neither really caught my attention. Ill have to connect my kindle to the local online library to read into it more.

Watching the accompanying anime also? Fairy Tail is getting amazing.
