I chose Redgaurd because of the combat bonus. You can lighten the skin and take the dirt off, so you don't look foreign...

I chose dark elf. I didn't play morrowind and they always seemed bad in oblivion. Good magic and sneak are nice, but resistance to fire is ideal vs dragons.

I am always a Dark Elf as my main character. I usually use an Argonian as a 2nd and I think I am going to make a Human Nord type for this game. It just seems fitting.

I always either play wood elf or dark elf thief/assassin builds with conjuring minions.

Depends upon what type of dragon you're fighting. I'm not sure how Elder Scrolls runs dragons but different color dragons tend to have different types of breath weapons/elemental attacks, with fire being one of the more common ones in fantasy games.

I'm running with the Nord, I'm level 3, I killed 2 giants that were camping out together which wasn't easy. Getting hit by them is brutal but funny. I got wacked by their club then cartwheeled through the sky lol!

Well, I am officially a Dark Elf. My intent has always been to be a Thief/Assassin type of character. My first goal was to become a Vampire which I was finally able to do yesterday. Now I just need to join the Thief's Guild and the Dark Brotherhood as soon as I can.

I did the Wood Elf as I'm also doing an Assassin type build, but with the bow. I did the same thing before but with the Dark Elf. I still think I should have done an Imperial, and then my sneak and bow skills would contribute more to my level as I rank them.

I still have only fought one Dragon. I started shooting arrows at another, but he flew away. I have 3 words now, but need some more souls for them.

I went with an Imperial and have been focusing on my two handed skills. The slow motion decapitation kill scenes are nice.

Out of curiosity, if you're character is using their skills, be it thievery, assassinations, magic, whatever, and you're not part of the appropriate guild or brotherhood, do you tend to have issues with NPCs hunting you down for not "paying the price to do business"? I've seen this in pencil/paper RPGs and wasn't too sure how it worked. Remember, I really haven't played and ES game since Morrowind.

Not really. I mean if you kill people you could have a hit put out on you or trouble with the law but that simply has to do with getting caught or pissing people off. AS for stealing, you really only have to worry about getting caught and finding a place to sell your stolen goods. Although, I did have a hit put out on me and I have no idea why. I must have killed someone I shouldn't have. Fortunately the assassin got more than she bargained for with me. They haven't sent anyone else so I guess I am good to go for now.

Dark Brotherhood had a hit out on me for a while but I mamed the guys they sent after me, and now I have joined the Brotherhood myself. If you leave no witnesses (kill em all) then you won't have a bounty with town guards.
Maxed out my blacksmith skill and made dragonbone armor, working on maxing my enchanting before I enchant my dragonbone so I can do 2 enchants on each piece.
Note, before improving an item on a grinder using smithing it is worth while to enchant a 4 piece set of smithing gear. I used my black Azura's Star to make a set and it boosted my armor level significantly when I improved them. It was weird though cause 1 piece boosted improvement, 2 pieces boosted improvement further, 3 pieces had no extra boost, but 4 pieces again boosted my improvement even more.

I'm running a female dark elf and I plan on building towards theif/assassin and probably vampire, although werewolf seems interesting too. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions since I haven't played a lot of ES games. I'm barely into the game, I just got to the first town and picked up the quest to get the golden claw for the trader. I'd appreciate any ideas on how to advance my character w/o spoilers. So far I'm pretty impressed and it's going to suck not having a ton of time to get into this.

The best hint I can give is to just work on the skills you like and want to use, and level those up. If you are not going to use alteration spells, don't read the books or train it up. That way your character level does not out pace your main skills. You don't want to be level 15 with all your destruction and heavy armor skills advanced up and your one-handed and light armor still at the bottom when you want to be a thief. In all honesty, the game is set to level on your play style, and the only way you can really mess it up is to boost unnecessary skills.

Well as I said in the other thread, I think the best thing to do is figure out what kind of character you want to be. Let's take the Thief type for example. A thief is generally going to specialize in Sneak, Pickpocket, Lockpicking, Light Armor, Speech, One-Handed Weapons and Archery. The best way to level up a skill is to use it as much as possible. This means sneaking everywhere, whenever possible. Use it to your advantage, sneak up on a enemy from a distance and put a few shots into him with you bow. This will help level up both your Archery and Sneak skills. Then once they see you switch to a one-handed weapon. The rest of the fight will give you One-Handed and Light Armor experience. Also, if you see a locked box or gate, try and pick the lock. All of these type of actions will help increase those skills. Also, as a thief you should definitely join the Thieves Guild. Talk to some people and you will soon find out where you should go to join.

Of course this is also true for Fighters, Mages etc... Whatever type of character you want to be, use those skills and when given the opportunity, put a perk in those skill trees as well. It is ok to diversify and branch out a bit. For instance, I do use magic spells too but I don't specialize in it (meaning I don't really put any perks into those skill trees). Still doesn't mean I can't torch a frost troll when the mood strikes me.

However, because I have kept to my specializations, I can clear an entire dungeon without being seen and without taking any damage. I am so sneaky that enemies standing 2 feet from me can't see me if I am in a shadow and I can do up to 15x damage from sneak attacks with my dagger.

I think I take the opposite approach. Everybody sees and hears me coming and I just lay into them with Wuuthrad and Dragon Shouts. It's a "bull in a china shop" style.

Nothing wrong with that! That is what makes the game so awesome. And if you level up your character that way and spend points with those perks you will have powerful abilities of your own. Ones that I can not come close to.

I kind of am starting to remember how the skill system works (ie. use it to increase it). Thanks everyone for all the advice. I plan to get the strat guide for Xmas so that will help too, but for now I'm picking the brains of all you fanboys so I can get started.
