Oklahoma earthquake

Post by S7 Coolhand on Sun Nov 06, 2011 12:05 am

Biggest I've ever felt happened minutes ago - I could actually see the walls and fixtures shake - lasted 30 seconds or so. Crazy! I wonder about the possible links between us fracking for natural gas and oil and our recent rise in earthquake occurrences and intensity. Anyone else feel that one?

I know it's early, but any guess on the rating?

Apparently, it was rated at a magnitude 5.6

Yeah I felt it here in Derby Kansas ( south of Wichita ). I had some friends report they felt it in Hutchinson and Kansas City as well. I was in a mumble channel and all my local friends freaked out, I had watched the news early today and heard about yesterdays earthquake so I instantly knew what it was. If it gets much bigger then that it could create problems with structure integrity. Houses here in Kansas all have basements and are not build for earthquakes with a magnitude much bigger then that.

Had two earthquakes yesterday, and about 5 others in the past two weeks....the joys of living in the Bay Area haha. One quake a couple weeks ago was a 3.9 which normally isn't anything for a Californian, but the epicenter was literally directly underneath my dorm building so it was a lot more violent than of the many 5.0-5.5's I've felt. There's been a huge string of smaller quakes under Berkeley (under ~4.0) these past few weeks making people kinda on edge. Luckily, we're not on the San Andreas fault like SF so we're not going to be the epicenter of "The Big One".

If I remember right, the largest fault line in North America runs thru like Illinois/Indiana/Michigan and when that one goes the whole country is going to feel it.

You're talking the new madrid fault (Missouri)...but it's only 120 miles -vs- the Andreas fault which runs 810 miles along the length of california. The reason they say we'll all feel it is it's the "middle" of the country and yes more people will feel it than just in one state.
