Women's FIFA World Cup 2011

Post by S7 Coolhand on Sat Jul 09, 2011 5:47 pm

Past the Group Stage, started the Quarter Finals today (single elimination). Awesome games today... I watched em streaming on ESPN through the Xbox.

First, England and France played to a 1-1 draw in regular play, and went goaless in
OT, then France beat England on penalty kicks to move on to the Semi Finals.

Second, the German host team couldn't get it done against Japan, going 0-0 through regular time, then Japan snuck one in during the second half of Over Time knocking Germany out of it's own world cup and serving them their first loss to an Asian team. Japan will now face France in the Semi Final July 13th.

Tomorrow on the other side of the bracket, Australia and Sweden will battle it out at 6:00AM CST. The winner faces...

#1 ranked Team USA faces #5 ranked Brazil in the the final leg of the Quarter Finals tomorrow, Sunday the 10th at 10:30AM CST on ESPN. Unlike the men's tournament, USA has the favored status over Brazil having won the World Cup twice (both against Brazil in the Final) while Brazil is still searching for their first. Only one of our current players has won a world cup, though most were around for an Olympic gold Beijing '08. Brazil, however, has the distinction of handing our ladies their biggest loss ever, 4-0 back in the Semi's of World Cup '07 when our coach replaced our star keeper mid game while she was working on her third straight shutout. Should be a great game tomorrow.

USA got off to a one goal lead against Brazil in the first half due to an early own-goal, but Brazil scored one in the second half (a bogus PK call complete with a red card). We played down one player for the rest of the half and went to overtime. In OT they scored another (although it was offsides but not called). So we were down 2-1 late in OT, but then in the last minute of stoppage time in overtime this happened:

Incredible! That was the last possible second to score...
That sent it to Penalty Kicks...

What a great finish to the game, one of the best I've ever watched.
USA's next game (semi-final) starts right now on ESPN.

As terrible as womens soccer can be I've been watching the games too. Any game that goes to a shootout is good.

Still waiting for kickoff.
I literally yelled and lept from my seat on that Wambach goal. I couldn't believe it. Reminds me of Donovan's 90th minute goal in the last men's WC.

2nd game to go to PKs so far. France and England went there in the quarters.

Don't mention the last world cup. I can't get the image of us missing easy shots for 10 minutes straight vs Ghana out of my head.

Ugh, I have to tear myself away from the Tour to watch it now. I hope the peloton will be okay without me.

1-1 France has tied it up early in the 2nd half. Now only 15 minutes left in regulation.

I've always been a big fan of the Japan teams. Their play style is typically a bit more flashy but less technically sound. Similar to how the Men's Brazil team plays. Sweden players tend to be more physical and go for a more solid style of play building up to attacks.

I haven't kept up with womens soccer in a couple years so that might have changed but countries don't usually suddenly change the way they play.

Sweden beat us in the group stage, so I'd say they are the more dangerous opponent. They are physically much bigger than the Japanese team, but maybe a step slower. IMHO Japan has been playing over their heads so far and I expect their luck to end soon, but their speed and creativity could take them further.

Japan has been playing at a borderline frantic pace. There's no way their midfield can keep it up for a full 90 minutes. If they don't get up this first half, or at the start of the 2nd half I don't see them winning.

And that's the explosive 2nd half start that they had to have.
With momentum like that should be an easy win for Japan now.

Final is Sunday the 17th at 1:30 (kickoff is probably really 2:00). Lets not forget that China took us all the way to PKs in the Final of 99. We can't discount thee Asian countries, they are explosive. The Japanese keeper is looking better, but I still think that is one key position we have a massive advantage on. They have just now nailed down who holds that job, while the US has Hope Solo, the best. Pretty sure we will win, just don't want to jinx it.
