Bearded Dragon

Post by S7 Interseptor on Mon Mar 28, 2011 11:20 am

Well I was in Jackson, MS this weekend just killing time and wondered into a Petsmart. Looking around and visiting with the animals when I came across a baby Bearded Dragon. Needless to say a few minutes later I was committed. Bought all the stuff needed and carried her home...

(Pretty bad picture, I'll take some more soon.)

Her name is Kono and she is a Fancy Bearded Dragon, which is a specific type of the species. She should grow to about 24" when full grown and will have red coloration. Only a few weeks old and already a bad ass hunter, tearing up some baby crickets.

She is currently in a starter tank (10 gallon tank) but will need a 40 gallon when full grown. I'll try to keep you updated with pictures as she grows. She will start to grow 1" per week in about 6 weeks and should be full grown in about 8 months.

Cool stuff. Do you have a UV lightbulb for him? I had an iguana at one time, and the proper light bulb was more important than a heated rock or anything. Might not be the same for bearded dragons though.

Yeah, a UVB light is essential. She has a basking lamp, UVB light and a night heat light. No heated rocks though. At least not yet. They can hurt the baby dragons.

LOL! For shame Droopy, for shame. Plus I am pretty sure you are thinking of a Bearded Clam. Totally different.

I'm not sure you even need a hot rock for a bearded dragon. And the heat lamps might be enough. Iguanas are primarily vegetarian, and had to have the rock to heat their belly so they could properly digest their food. Then again- coleslaw mix is cheaper to buy and easier to keep than crickets and meal worms- LOL.

True on the Crickets. Fortunately, I have a local bait shop and can buy 100 at a time. Kinda of a weekly food run once she gets big enough but right now she needs baby crickets so I have to order them online 1000 at a time. This means I will have to keep them alive and feed the d@mn things! But that should only be a for a month or two

Meal worms are easy. Refrigerate. Seriously. Just put the container in the fridge. They last for months, no feeding, no smell. Pop them out of the fridge and once they heat up they start moving. Super easy.

That is what I am feeding her right now, but they are not as exciting as crickets. She really likes hunting crickets and chasing them down.

I had an iguana when I was younger to it would get out of it's tank and we would find it on a window screen or clinging to the rug under the radiators.

Any way cool dragon Zak

+5 cool points for 'Septor!
VERY, VERY COOL Sir. I always wanted a Python personally but just as I was about to get one my wife announced her pregnacy with my son. That was 21 years ago this coming October. Haven't had a chance to get anything that cool again since full grown Python = dead baby affraid No

Thanks. Actually my 10 year old wants a Python which I wouldn't mind letting him have accept for the feeding issue. See, I live in a VERY small town. No pet shops at all. Can't even get live baby crickets and definitely can't get feeder mice so unfortunately no Pythons for us. Sad

Fortunately, I found a place to order baby crickets online. $14 = 1000 baby crickets so I will be good to go (Plus the local bait shop sells adult crickets when she gets older).

You know how much stuff I could have bought if they grew up in 8 months instead of it taking 18 years + hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars?

As humans we get cheated!! Mad

Yeah but that 8 months would be intense. New clothes and shoes every week! Shocked Fortunately, after that it would be smooth sailing. Cool
