So here's my situation...

Post by PootyPoo22 on Sun Mar 27, 2011 2:39 pm

A couple weeks ago, my wife tripped over my xbox internet cable and ripped it out of the wall. Since then, as those of you who've played with me have seen, I have had problems with my XBL connection going in and out randomly. Now the problem has gotten worse and I can't connect at all. So now my question is: have any of you wired your own Cat.6 ethernet wall jack? I'm almost certain this is the problem considering the amount of play in the jack when I try to plug the cable in. I've never done anything like this and before I take it on I was wondering if any of you could help. Last resort is calling the cable company considering they charge $50 just to come look at it. Any help is much appreciated.

All the cabling we do is Cat.5e, as far as actually wiring the jack it seems far more likely the cable was damaged than the jack itself. Have you tried a different cable? That'd be the easiest way. Not sure on Cat 6 pricing but cat 5 is usually $1/foot so shouldnt be too expensive. If a new cable doesn't work then the easiest way is going to be to follow an instruction guide online. I can look for some links if you try out a new cable. Toms Hardware or Youtube will probably have the best/easiest guides to follow for setting the jack up.

$20 service call = fixed, no hassle - that's the way I would go, but I'm lazy.

$50 service call Coolhand. If it was twenty I'd consider it. That also doesn't include any parts or labor.

wiring the jack isn't that hard if you get the right jack. the wires are really small and usually color coded somewhat. My advice is to go to lowes or radio shack and look at the wall socket/jacks they have. they make one that you place all the wires in place and it either clamps them in place or it has a push pin, that you hold down with a tiny screwdriver, slip the wire in and then let off the push pin, and it holds it in place. I say give it a shot, its not electricty,so its pretty safe and the jack range from 8-16 bucks, plus you'll learn something and you can always return the jack if ya fail

Yeah the wires are color coded. Just be sure to differentiate the solid color and the solid w/white stripes. Other than that there should be diagrams online making it fairly easy.

Here's a walkthrough

Here's a pic of what the color coding on the keystone jack should look like:

Thanks for the help guys. Turns out Atrum was right and it was the cable. Surprisingly enough, it was cheaper than what you said. I got a 35 ft. cable for $20. The best part of that is now I can plug in my XBox without being forced to pull it out of the entertainment center. This also makes my wife happy. Thanks again for everything guys. The Brotherhood pulls through again!!!
